I recently did a project called focus? which focused on looking at our environment in a way that we never do. I have done a previous blog post which is dedicated to the start of this project. <https://www.contrivancemagazine.co.uk/post/focus>
focus? recap:
‘focus?’ is a Fine Art Photography project that seeks to explore the beauty and complexity of not knowing, by seeing the world from a new perspective. We are all part of an evolving, unfinished picture and our task is to take on the role of helping create the rest. It can become easy to lose sight of what matters most. Through expressive colour and texture, this series will transport you to a new way of looking at what surrounds us.
This work was recently exhibited in my local gallery at the 'Apex' in Bury St Edmunds. It was an amazing experience to see my work up on a wall, and having one of my projects up for the public to see.
It taught me a lot about the importance of getting yourself out there and the importance of creating connections within the art industry.
I wanted to carry this project on, but incorporate my mixed media style which is something that I have been doing a lot recently. The reason I enjoy mixed media photography is that it creates this blurred line between photography and art. This is something in which I find super interesting, it gives me as a creator a lot of opportunity to experiment within my work, not being restricted to a certain technique or median.
So, I decided to use my focus? photographs as a base to create mixed media pieces of art out of.
I printed the three photographs from above out, and painted, drew and added text over top. I scanned each physical print into photoshop and played around with different tools to create different textures and patterns over the work. Blending modes are usually my go to as a starting point, as this is an effective way to make layers blend seamlessly together.
I really enjoyed creating an extension to my focus? project. I felt that I had a rather spontaneous attitude to it whilst doing it. I had no set idea or vision for the work, which I feel sometimes creates for more unique and expressive work. I will certainly be doing more mixed media work with my focus? project. If you want to see anymore of this style, please check out my instagram account (linked below) as I will be posting much more mixed media photography work in the next coming weeks.
